Project Overview:

This project involved the replacement of an aging sewer main on the steep slope of Telegraph Hill, home to San Francisco’s historic Coit Tower.

The scope included the installation of a new 10” ductile iron pipe (DIP) sewer line on the nearly vertical face of the hill, requiring a highly specialized approach.

Strategic Approach:

Sewer Main Replacement & Bypass Setup:

  • Carefully dismantled the existing sewer system while maintaining full functionality.

  • Installed a temporary bypass to ensure uninterrupted service during construction.

Vertical Installation & Access Challenges:

  • Tackled the rare challenge of vertical sewer line installation on a steep hillside.

  • Developed custom rigging and access methods to safely work on the slope.

Coordination & Safety:

  • Worked closely with city agencies to protect surrounding infrastructure and pedestrian areas.

  • Prioritized crew safety and environmental protection throughout hillside operations.
